Retinol (the chemical name for vitamin A) has long been an effective beauty secret.
Retinol lightens and brightens pigment, exfoliates and makes the layers of the skin thicker and more organized. It is the latter effect that can smooth out fine wrinkles and superficial scars. Overall the skin looks brighter, more radiant and smoother.
The downside of Retinol is the decrease in sebum production leading to drying out of the skin, and the side effects of irritation (dryness, tightness, flakiness) and sun sensitivity (leading to sunburn with far less sun exposure than normal). Retinol should not be used during pregnancy or breast-feeding.
